OVERVIEW

Namibia is one of Africa’s most captivating travel destinations — a country of dramatic landscapes, wide open spaces, diverse wildlife, and unforgettable self-drive adventures. Located on the southwest coast of Africa, Namibia borders Angola, Zambia, Botswana, South Africa, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Covering more than 825,000 km² with a population of just over 2.5 million people, Namibia is among the least densely populated countries in the world. This creates a unique sense of freedom and remoteness that makes Namibia ideal for road trips, overlanding, camping, and photographic safaris.

The country is named after the ancient Namib Desert, widely regarded as the oldest desert on earth. From the towering red dunes of Sossusvlei and the rugged Skeleton Coast to Etosha National Park and the granite peaks of Spitzkoppe, Namibia offers some of the most spectacular scenery in Africa.

Namibia is politically stable, modern, and well suited to independent travellers. English is the official language, tourism infrastructure is well developed, and visitors are welcomed with warm Namibian hospitality.

TRAVEL & ROAD CONDITIONS

Namibia is internationally recognised as one of the world’s best self-drive destinations. The country’s road network connects major attractions efficiently and allows travellers to explore safely at their own pace.

International visitors typically arrive via:

  • Hosea Kutako International Airport (Windhoek)
  • Walvis Bay International Airport

Main routes between towns and tourism destinations are generally well-maintained tar roads. Many scenic routes and remote areas are connected by gravel roads, which are also maintained to good standards but require careful driving and reduced speeds.

For the best travel experience — especially when visiting national parks, desert regions, or remote camping destinations — a reliable 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended.

General speed limits:

  • 120 km/h on tar roads
  • 80–100 km/h on gravel roads (conditions dependent)

Travellers should avoid driving after dark due to wildlife, livestock, and reduced visibility on rural roads.

HEALTH & MEDICAL SERVICES

Namibia offers good private healthcare facilities in major towns and cities including Windhoek, Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, and Oshakati. Private hospitals and medical centres provide modern medical care and emergency services.

Visitors are strongly advised to travel with comprehensive travel and medical insurance, including emergency evacuation cover for remote areas.

Most private healthcare providers require payment upfront via credit card or cash.

SAFETY & SECURITY

Namibia is considered one of the safer travel destinations in Africa and is widely enjoyed by international self-drive visitors each year.

As with any travel destination, visitors should remain aware of their surroundings and take sensible precautions, particularly in busy urban areas. Opportunistic theft can occur, especially involving unattended bags, cameras, mobile phones, and valuables.

Safety recommendations:

  • Do not leave valuables visible inside vehicles
  • Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas
  • Park in secure or well-lit locations
  • Keep passports and important documents secure

Tourist areas and major towns are regularly patrolled, and Namibia remains a welcoming and rewarding destination for independent travellers.

WEATHER & CLIMATE

Namibia enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine per year, making it an excellent year-round travel destination.

Summer (November – April)
Warm temperatures with occasional afternoon thunderstorms, particularly in the north and central regions.

Winter (May – October)
Dry, sunny days with cooler mornings and evenings — ideal for camping, wildlife viewing, and self-drive travel.

Average temperatures:

  • Summer: 25°C – 35°C
  • Winter: 18°C – 28°C

Desert and inland regions can experience significant temperature differences between day and night.

CURRENCY & PAYMENTS

The official currency is the Namibian Dollar (N$), which is pegged to the South African Rand (ZAR). Both currencies are accepted throughout Namibia.

Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in towns, fuel stations, lodges, restaurants, and supermarkets. However, travellers visiting remote areas should carry some cash for smaller establishments and rural locations.

ATMs and banking facilities are available in all major towns.

DISTANCES & DRIVING TIMES

Namibia’s vast landscapes are part of the adventure. Distances between destinations can be significant, and travel times are often longer than expected, especially on gravel roads.

We recommend allowing plenty of time between destinations to enjoy scenic stops, photography opportunities, and a relaxed driving experience.

Approximate distances between major destinations are available in the table below. Actual travel times may vary depending on route selection and road conditions.
